The Lakeville United Church of Christ or, our” Little Church with a Big Heart” welcomes all to worship with us. On the outside our church looks like a typical old-fashioned little white rural church but its soul is very much a modern, open-minded and community friendly place of worship.

The roots of the Lakeville United Church of Christ date back to 1795 when Daniel Thatcher established a Presbyterian Church in Geneseo. In 1809 a group of Congregationalists who were members of the Geneseo Presbyterian left to begin their own congregation. The original church moved to Lakeville and built a building in 1824. The present sanctuary was built in 1855. At the same time, a group was meeting in South Lima homes and later built the Christian Church of Lakeville 200 yards from the present LUCC sanctuary.

In 1922 the Presbyterian Church of Geneseo and Christian Church of Lakeville merged, dropping their denominational affiliations and becoming the Community Church of Lakeville. Worship was conducted in the present sanctuary and the former Christian Church became a Community House used for church school, church social activities and community gatherings. This Community House was in use from 1930 to 1977 when it then became a private residence.

In 1928 the church affiliated with the New York Congregational Conference, which offered a great deal of autonomy and freedom. Globally in 1957 the Congregational Christian Church and Evangelical and Reformed Church united to form a single denomination — the United Church of Christ. This is the union of four traditions — the Congregationalists (Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony), the Reformed Church (often called the German Reformed Church — Calvinist), the Christian Church (based on the belief that all sectarian labels were inappropriate since we are all one in Christ), and the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (a German group that came to USA 100 years ago after the founders of the Reformed Church). In 1988 the Community Church of Lakeville changed its name to reflect this identity and became the Lakeville United Church of Christ.
